Ajit Moorkoth is a Consultant Rehabilitation Practitioner, Professional Special Educator, and Psychologist, with training from India and Australia. He has 32 years of professional experience with interests in neurodevelopmental disorders and early intervention services for high-risk/at-risk neonates and infants. Ajit’s key interests and skills include educational diagnostics, personnel preparation in disability rehabilitation and special education, school reform practices, early intervention services, and positive behaviour intervention and support.

Ajit has a bachelor’s degree in disability rehabilitation from NIEPID, (formerly NIMH), Secunderabad where he specialised in intellectual disability and interned in early intervention for high and at-risk newborns and toddlers. With an Australian Government’s full scholarship, he secured an M.Ed. in Special Education degree from the University of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, specialising in learning disabilities, behaviour disorders, and gifted and talented children. Subsequently, he joined for an M.Phil. Degree in Education with thesis work on Dual Sensory Impairments/Deafblindness. Ajit also has a Master of Psychology degree from the University of Madras. He is at present a doctoral research scholar in disabilities at Amrita University, India.

A pioneer in introducing both clinic and school-based special education services in Kerala, Ajit has played a significant role in establishing many organizations in this area in Kerala. Among them, the first regular school-based special education services; the first clinical institute for assessment and diagnosis of children with neurodevelopment disorders; the first exclusive full-time educational facility for children with learning disabilities and school dropouts; the first Diploma in Special Education(cross-category) program recognized by the Government of Kerala, and the first one-year Nursery Teacher Training Program with a compulsory subject on Early Childhood Inclusive Education. He was also an Assistant Professor of Special Education, teaching B.Ed. and M.Ed. in Special Education programs affiliated with the University of Kerala. He also taught for the UGC’s Innovative Course, the M.Phil. in Learning Disability program, of the Department of Psychology at the University of Kerala as a visiting faculty.

In recognition of his achievements in the field of disability rehabilitation and special education, Ajit has received numerous awards and recognitions to his credit. In 2018, he was appreciated for his contributions as a Jury Member on the prestigious Princess Haya Award for Special Education (UAE). In 2014, he was invited by the Kumla Municipality in Sweden to visit Kumla, Orebro, and Stockholm to exchange ideas on special and inclusive education between Cochin and Sweden. In 2013, Ajit received the Shreshtacharya Award in recognition of his meritorious services in the field of disability rehabilitation. He is also the recipient of the NIMH Fellowship (2002), ORAS Award (2000) from Sheffield University in the UK, Merit Award (2000) from Hull University in the UK, and the AIDAB/ADCOS Award (1994) from the Government of Australia.
